What's the deal with weight lifting belts?

Weightlifting belts are worn around the waist and are commonly used by bodybuilders and powerlifters to support the lower back during heavy lifting. The belts work by providing an external source of support for the abdominal and lower back muscles, which can help to reduce the stress on the spine and lower back.

When lifting heavy weights, the spine can be subjected to a lot of compressive force. The abdominal and lower back muscles are responsible for helping to stabilize the spine and protect it from injury. However, these muscles can become fatigued quickly, especially when lifting very heavy weights. A weightlifting belt can provide additional support and stability to the abdominal and lower back muscles, allowing the lifter to lift heavier weights safely.

Weightlifting belts also help to increase intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) which is the pressure inside the abdominal cavity. The IAP helps to support the spine and provide a solid base for lifting heavy weight.

It's important to note that weightlifting belts should not be worn all the time during training, as they can weaken the core muscles if overused. They are used to support the body during heavy lifting and should not be used as a crutch for poor form or technique. It's always good to consult with a personal trainer or coach for proper use and training with weightlifting belts
